The Job Is Not Drying the Floor
The visible water is the easy part. What takes days is the water that soaked into drywall, framing, subfloor, cabinet bases and the mortar bed under tile. Those materials release moisture slowly, and until they do the building is not dry no matter how the surface feels.
That is why a drying plan is built around readings rather than appearances. Moisture content is measured in each affected material and compared with a dry part of the same building, and those numbers become the target the equipment is working toward.
What Air Movers Actually Do
An air mover is not a fan pointed at a puddle. It pushes a thin, fast layer of air along a wet surface, which strips away the saturated air sitting right against the material and lets more moisture leave it. That is why they are aimed low along walls and across flooring at a shallow angle, spaced around a room rather than clustered.
Where a wall cavity is wet, air has to get inside it. Base trim comes off and small holes may be drilled behind it so air can move through the cavity, which is often what saves the drywall from being cut out. That is planned and explained first, not improvised at the wall.
What Dehumidifiers Do
Air movers move moisture from materials into the air. Something then has to take it out of the air, or it simply lands on the next cool surface in the house. A dehumidifier draws room air across a cold coil or a desiccant, collects the water and returns drier air to the room. The water drains to a pump or a hose rather than into a bucket somebody has to empty.
Capacity is matched to the wet volume. Too little equipment drags a job out for days; too much just costs more without drying faster. Both halves have to run together, which is why opening a window and running household fans is not the same thing.
The Tucson Advantage, and Its Limits
Outdoor air here is unusually dry for most of the year, and that genuinely helps. Compared with a humid state, a dehumidifier in Tucson has less moisture to fight and jobs often finish sooner. It is one of the few things about desert construction that works in your favor after a leak.
The advantage narrows during the monsoon weeks from July into September, when indoor humidity climbs and the equipment does more of the work. It disappears altogether in a house that was closed up and warm while the water sat, which is the situation in so many seasonal homes. Dry outside air cannot help a building nobody has opened.
How Long It Usually Runs
Longer than most people expect, and there is no honest number that fits every job. A small clean-water spill in one room is short work. Soaked wall cavities, cabinet kicks and flooring assemblies take substantially longer, and a job where the water sat for days may not be a drying job at all.
The equipment comes out when the readings say the materials are back to normal, not on a fixed schedule. Ask to see the numbers each day. A company that can show you the trend is a company that is actually monitoring the job.
Living With It
Drying equipment is loud and it makes rooms warm, and that is the honest trade-off. Do not switch it off overnight: moisture redistributes through the building and you lose the progress made that day. If a machine is intolerable in a bedroom, say so and the layout can usually be changed rather than the equipment shut down.
Keep interior doors positioned as the crew left them, keep the air conditioning set as instructed, and leave the containment sheeting alone if any has been put up. When Drying Is Not Enough
Some material will not come down to a normal reading no matter how long the machines run, usually because it is saturated, has swelled or has wet insulation trapped behind it. Anything touched by drain water or outside flood water is removed rather than dried regardless of the readings.
